A mother I know had spent the whole summer in the company of her children,
thinking only of their needs.
On her return in the fall she went for the first time in months to an adult dinner party.
To her horror she discovered that, to start conversation with the distinguished man next to her,
she said automatically, "I bet I can finish my soup sooner than you can."
