there is no isolation from anything

This is a picture that I took on Monday somewhere in Pennsylvania on our way to Penn State for the Grateful Dead reunion. The trees were so beautiful.
We met up with our friend Paul there......and we talked to him on the phone
on our way home. So, you can imagine how surprised I was to get an email from my friend,
Debbie saying that Paul had been in the ICU at the hospital for the past 3 days.
On Wednesday, he was getting ready to fix the chimney on one of his rental properties when a brick fell 35 feet from the top of the chimney and hit him in the head. He was knocked unconscious, then rushed to Huron Road Hospital where they discovered he had a fractured skull and internal bleeding. After a few tense days, his condition stabilized, but he is still in the hospital ICU as of today. His guardian angel, likely his late wife Donna, must have been there to soften the blow, because a brick falling from 35 feet and hitting you in the head can be fatal.

Think of a tree. When you think of a tree, you tend to think of a distinctly defined object. But when you look at it more closely, you will see that it has no independent existence. When you contemplate it you will find that it dissolves into an extremely subtle net of relationships that stretch across the universe. The rain that falls on its leaves, the wind that sways it, the soil that nourishes and sustains it all the seasons all form part of the tree. As you think about the tree more and more you will discover that everything in the universe helps make the tree what it is; that it cannot be isolated from anything else and at every moment its nature is subtly changing.
