Being Cured

"Sometimes people ask me why their lives have been filled with so much struggle and suffering. I often respond, 'Because you are being cured and seasoned to be a fine offering to life's dinner table.' I remind them of how fruit, vegetables, and meat are cured and how dishes are seasoned to preserve the finest qualities and enhance the taste. I even mention that the concrete used to make sidewalks and highways must be cured in order for it to be strong, enabling travelers to reach their destination. We go on to discuss how the heat and pressure of suffering are necessary to cure and season us. The greater the pressure and heat of our experience, the more likely we are to become a unique and valuable presence in the world, more able to reach our destiny."
